Indigenous Climate Leaders to Launch report on Decolonizing Climate Policy at COP28

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Climate policy is failing. Colonial approaches to policy and policymaking continue to block Indigenous peoples from taking action on issues directly impacting their lands and communities. Indigenous Climate Action (ICA), a Canadian-based Indigenous-led climate justice organization on the ground at COP28, is looking at ways to address challenges in climate policy through its Decolonizing Climate Policy Project. ICA is in the second phase of the three-phase research project and will be launching part one of the phase two report later today.

ICA’s research has documented a pattern of inflexible, limiting, and inaccessible climate policies that do not align with Indigenous worldviews and in many cases actively harm Indigenous peoples and their ability to lead effective climate action in their territories.

To meaningfully confront climate change, policies, and solutions must target the persistent drivers and underlying causes of the crisis. These efforts should prioritize amplifying the voices, addressing the needs, and recognizing the leadership of those most impacted by the crisis. 

ICA’s panel on December 9, 2023, will feature a diverse group of Indigenous climate leaders who will delve into the concept of decolonizing climate policy and share their perspectives on its significance within Canada. Speakers include:
