Statement: 2025 Federal Election
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, April 30, 2025 — Another federal election has come to a close and many voters across so-called Canada are celebrating the win of a supposed “lesser of two evils.” An interesting sentiment to witness considering this country does not claim a two-party political system.
This election marks a political shift towards what we're seeing south of the medicine line. A system that lacks diverse voices who have historically been the leaders in advancing the rights of Indigenous peoples, human rights, gender rights, labour rights, and climate justice. It is a truly concerning shift that further strengthens and locks us into a system based in oppression, dispossession, and harmful extractivism.
“Regardless of who is in power, we still exist under a broken colonial system that upholds white supremacy, protects corporate interests.”
Throughout this election, fear took a front seat.
From fear-based campaigning to aggressive strategic voting campaigns, voters were urged to hold the line and push back against our neighbors to the south and against one of two political parties. This political binary of good and evil is an oversimplification and distraction from reality. Regardless of who is in power, we still exist under a broken colonial system that upholds white supremacy, protects corporate interests, and relies on Indigenous subjugation.
This election, both parties campaigned on a platform of fast tracking extractive projects that would further harm our territories in the name of “Canadian Sovereignty." From a Two-Eyed Seeing perspective, this isn’t just politics – it’s a continuation of a deep-rooted history of land theft and environmental violence. Our voices, rights and responsibilities as land defenders, water protectors and knowledge keepers are ignored when pipelines are built without consent or when industry and government disrespect our sacred sites. So-called Canadian sovereignty shouldn’t come at the expense of Indigenous sovereignty, nor should it be an excuse to violate our inherent rights.
“Our stance is that no matter who holds power they have a responsibility to engage in nation-to-nation decisions that respect the self-determination of Indigenous Peoples. ”
As an organization, Indigenous Climate Action (ICA) remains non-partisan. Our stance is that no matter who holds power they have a responsibility to engage in nation-to-nation decisions that respect the self-determination of Indigenous Peoples. Our mission is to ensure Indigenous Peoples are reinforced as the natural and rightful leaders driving climate policy throughout so-called Canada.
True climate justice can only be achieved when Indigenous Peoples are given the rightful power to determine the fate of our lands and territories.

Indigenous Climate Action is the only Indigenous-led climate justice organization in so-called Canada. Guided by a diverse group of Indigenous knowledge keepers, water protectors and land defenders from communities and regions across the country, we believe that Indigenous Peoples’ rights and knowledge systems are critical to developing solutions to the climate crisis and achieving climate justice. We model our work and organizational structure on systems of free, prior and informed consent and self-determination. By providing communities with knowledge and resources, we can inspire a new generation of Indigenous climate leaders building solutions centered around our inherent rights and cultures.
