Defend Water, Defend Life

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | November 11, 2022

Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt – Indigenous Peoples at UNFCCC COP27 are hosting an event, ‘Defend Water, Defend Life.’ This event will be hosted at the International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change (IIPFCC) Pavilion media zone located in Zone C on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 9:00am. This is part of the International Day of Action that calls for an end to the climate crisis and justice for those on the frontlines of climate chaos.

This action and press event will bring awareness to the politics of water by uplifting the voices and lived experiences of Indigenous Peoples on the frontlines of water protection and climate change. As stewards of 80% of the world’s biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples hold the answers to addressing climate change and protecting our lands and waterways.

Join us and hear from Indigenous Peoples across the world and the intersections of their struggles to defend their lands, rights, critical resources like water, sustaining livelihoods and the future of our planet. Some notable speakers include activists Great Grandmother Mary Lyons (Anishinaabe), Emem Okon (Ogoni/Niger Delta), Ruth Nyambura (Kenya), Ika Angelei (Turkana, Kenya), and more.

This event is being co-organized with Indigenous Peoples from all seven regions of the world,  including Indigenous Environmental Network, Indigenous Climate Action, NDN Collective, and the International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change
