From Indigenous Peoples Day to Anti-Canada Day, Honour Identities and Leadership at the Heart of our Movements

Behind every initiative at Indigenous Climate Action (ICA) is a story of leadership, healing and transformation. Land defense, climate justice and cultural revitalization is essential to everyone, yet we know the impacts of climate change don’t impact us all, equally.

If you’ve been around here for a while, you’ll know our work at ICA focuses on the intersections of climate justice, gender justice, human rights, and the rights of Indigenous Peoples. We firmly believe climate justice cannot exist without addressing the intersecting rights of ALL peoples - because we will never be free until we are all free.

June is a month of intersectionality and celebration: Pride, National Indigenous People’s Day, Summer Solstice, Juneteenth, and World Environment Day. These celebrations remind us of the diversity within our communities like the ecosystems we inhabit.

Courtney Wynn, Development Coordinator at Indigenous Climate Action, shares that as someone with many intersecting identities — Indigenous, Black, Neurodiverse, Queer, female — they actively seek out spaces that embrace the diversity they hold. It’s truly beautiful to be in a community, celebrating both their own and others' diversity.

While these spaces and gatherings nurture different aspects of ourselves, we are often more alike and aligned than not, seeking the same things: safety, acceptance, growth, nurturement, nourishment, liberation, empowerment, connection, and forgiveness.

In times like these when facing serious injustices like the genocide in Palestine, rising state violence, harmful policies like Bill C-5 that restrict individual’s bodily autonomy and/or harm the environment, as well as wildfires raging across the country, it’s important to remember that movements for justice are stronger when we come together in all our diversity.

We, as Indigenous Peoples contribute least to the climate crisis, but among the most affected. Indigenous leaders from places like Grand Council Treaty #3 have warned governments multiple times for support to help evacuate communities before the wildfires got worse. Still, our voices are often ignored, and support only comes when it’s too late – leaving communities like Pimickkamak (Cross Lake Cree Nation) and Pukatawagan (Mathias Columb Cree Nation) at serious risk.

Indigenous Peoples consistently face ignorance, displacement, and harm of the growing climate crisis and the lasting impact of colonial rule.

We must continue to uplift Indigenous leadership and support Indigenous communities who are leading the way in climate solutions. Their knowledge, rooted in thousands of years of living in balance with all living beings, holds the key to a sustainable and just future for everyone on Turtle Island.

This moment calls for more than acknowledgment – it calls for action and solidarity. As climate disasters increase and colonial systems continue to fail us, we must follow the wisdom and leadership of Indigenous communities. Their knowledge can guide us toward healing the land, our relationships, and the future.

Join Us in Making an Impact

From National Indigenous Peoples Day to Anti-Canada Day, this is a time to confront the truth about so-called Canada, resist the systems that continue to harm our communities, our land, and our future while deepening connections and uplifting diverse grassroots leadership, healing, and transformation rooted in land, identity, and resilience.

This June, during National Indigenous Peoples Month and Pride Month, we honour leadership and knowledge of Indigenous and 2SLGBTQ+ folk who are at the forefront of transformative movements for justice.

With July 1 quickly approaching, we recognize Anti-Canada Day as a time to reflect the realities of colonial violence, ongoing harm while challenging the narratives that erase our histories. It’s a moment to reclaim OUR stories, resist systemic oppression, and reimagine a future rooted in justice and care.
