Victoria Redsun
Through the teachings of Dënesųłiné and Nîhitho and the spirit of ndé & tué, I carry responsibilities to the land and water that have been passed down to carry forward the protection of our territories in the North. I am from the Dettanikaze (Eagle’s Claw) and Merasty family from Etthén Tue (Reindeer Lake).
I serve as a youth representative for Manitoban caribou herds on the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board, and I sit on the Seal River Watershed Alliance advisory board on behalf of my community, Barren Lands First Nation for the creation of an Indigenous Protected Area in Northern Manitoba, and continue to work with my community with the arts, mining resistance and capacity building for youth in the territory.
My education has been shaped by the profound connections with aunties and artists formed through mentorship and grassroots community space. Being a storysharer through art has given me a pathway of resistance to stand up against violent systems and rebuild our own. I have stood in solidarity with my Selot’ine across Turtle Island and have faced arrests through peaceful occupation against extractive projects. My films and visual art have been shared internationally and I continue to work on a caribou hunting film focused on the protection of traditional practices.
